The Department of Greek and Latin regularly teaches a full sequence of elementary and intermediate language courses in its Summer Program; their descriptions appear below. Advanced-level language courses are also offered (see the bottom of this page). All of these courses are offered live (synchronously) online.

  • GR 509: Intensive Elementary Greek (6 cr)

    First six-week summer session, roughly mid-May through late June. A rapid but thorough treatment of the forms and grammatical principles of the Greek language, designed for those who wish to accelerate study of the language.

     

  • GR 516: Intensive Intermediate Greek I (3 cr)

    Second six-week summer session for the first three weeks, roughly end of June through mid-July. A sequel to 509. Provides experience in reading classical Greek prose and/or poetry at the intermediate level.

     

  • GR 517: Intensive Intermediate Greek II (3 cr)

    Second six-week summer session for the last three weeks, roughly mid-July through the first week of August. A sequel to 516. Provides further experience in reading classical Greek prose and/or poetry at the intermediate level. Please note that 516 (or the departmental placement exam in Greek) is a prerequisite for 517.

     

  • LAT 509: Intensive Elementary Latin (6 cr)

    First six-week summer session, roughly mid-May through late June. A rapid but thorough treatment of the forms and grammatical principles of the Latin language, designed for those who wish to accelerate study of the language. Some experience in reading continuous Latin texts of limited complexity.

     

  • LAT 516: Intensive Intermediate Latin I (3 cr)

    Second six-week summer session for the first three weeks, roughly end of June through mid-July. A sequel to 509. Provides experience in reading classical Latin prose and/or poetry at the intermediate level.

     

  • LAT 517: Intensive Intermediate Latin II (3 cr)

    Second six-week summer session for the last three weeks, roughly mid-July through the first week of August. A sequel to 516. Provides further experience in reading classical Latin prose and/or poetry at the intermediate level. Please note that 516 (or the departmental placement exam in Latin) is a prerequisite for 517.

     

  • LAT 517B: Intensive Intermediate Latin II: Augustine and Aquinas (3 cr)

    Second six-week summer session for the last three weeks, roughly mid-July through the first week of August. A sequel to 516. Provides further experience in reading Latin at the intermediate level, using the works of these two specific authors. Please note that 516 (or the departmental placement exam in Latin) is ordinarily a prerequisite for 517B.

  • Advanced-level language courses

    One language during the first six-week summer session, roughly mid-May through late June; the other language during the second six-week summer session, roughly end of June through the first week of August. These courses are numbered as GR 492/592 and LAT 492/592 and entitled "Directed Reading," so that their specific topics can be tailored to the interests of class members. Please note that a placement exam is required for students from outside Catholic University who wish to register for these courses.
