It has always been a requirement at CUA for Ph.D. dissertations to be published, although a few of the early ones never were. Before Professor Roy Deferrari's arrival in 1918, students in the separate departments of Greek and Latin saw to the publication of their own dissertations. After his arrival, dissertations were put into three series published by the CUA Press: CUA Classical Studies (2 dissertations), CUA Patristic Studies (100 dissertations), and CUA Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Latin Language and Literature (26 dissertations). Beginning in 1963, submission of a dissertation to University Microfilms also counted for publication, and after 1971, with the closing of CUA Patristic Studies, it became the only option available.

Short biographies are also available for a number of these dissertation writers down to the year 1935.

*Though not identified as such when published, these two works were considered by Deferrari to belong to the series CUA Classical Studies, about which he comments in his Memoirs (pp. 153-54): "The first of these three series has not prospered, although this does not indicate any lack of interest or appreciation of the Classical field on the part of the members of the Department . . . The growth of each series is an indication of the preferred special interest of the students who have come to us for training. Thus the Classical Series has but two volumes accomplished as dissertations under my direction in the very early part of my career."
